Cyntoia Brown was forced into prostitution by a boyfriend when she was just a teenage, continuously raped and held against her will. When she was 16 years old, she was sold to a man named Johnny Allen. Cyntoia shot and killed her captor one night, and was arrested on murder charges. Cyntoia, just 16, was tried as an adult in 2004 and sentenced to life in prison with opportunity for parole after 51 years served. Her case sparked major outrage. Here she was, a child and sex slave who killed the man keeping her captive so she could escape. She was the subject of a 2011 PBS documentary about her case, and her story gained renewed attention in 2017, when celebrities like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian found out about her and lobbied for her release. Cyntoia was granted clemency by the then-Tennessee governor in January 2018. She was granted freedom and released from the Tennessee Prison for Women on August 7, 2019.
